In what would become a firm TV tradition, Patrick Troughton took over the role of the Doctor in the show's first regeneration scene at the end of the story, The Tenth Planet. This was to be a very different Doctor from the one portrayed by William Hartnell. Gone was the tetchiness of the original, to be replaced by a warm and childish sense of fun. Departed was the Edwardian gentleman look of Hartnell's Doctor, to be replaced by a tramp-like and Chaplinesque cosmic hobo image...
