In the winter of 1874 pioneer explorer Alfred Packer leads a group of prospectors into the Colorado Rockies in search of gold. He was to return alone and months later the mutilated, partially eaten bodies of his companions were found near Lake Fort Gunnison. Packer claimed it was another member of the party that was responsible for the deaths and that he only resorted to cannibalism as a means of survival in the unusually harsh winter conditions. Alfred Packer was the only man in American History ever to have been convicted of cannibalism.
