Granite - Doogie White and La Paz
This was an album purchased out of nostalgia, from memories of times gone by when La Paz strutted the stages of many a venue back in the 80's. However, having finally signed that elusive record deal, the band have ensured that there is nothing dated about the final product. For a start. there are 9 very good songs here, no throw away album fillers to be seen. The musicianship is top notch all the way through, with proper guitar and keyboard solos, unlike so many of the alleged "rock" acts of today. The drums and bass are tight, powerful and hold the whole thing together, forming a tremendous basis on which to build the songs. Then we have the soaring voice of front man Doogie White, once of Rainbow, Malmsteen, Tank and others. La Paz was his first real foray into the world of rock back in the day and it's quite obvious that he is completely at home with them. The guys are clearly still very good friends and the whole project just feels right somehow. They bring out the best in each other, no doubt about it. I won't go through the songs one by one. Suffice to say that La Paz have nailed it when it comes to commercial, chorus laden, catchy rock songs that will have you singing along in no time at all. It's also very danceable so there's something for everyone there. It would be tough to chose a single from this collection, there are at least 5 good candidates. That'll be a nice problem for the record company if they go down that line. Right up until the last track that is, because "Shame the Devil" doesn't really fall into the catchy category. It is so much more, a rock classic in waiting in fact. If this song gets played on air a couple of times, and believe me when I say that it should, then look out. All rock bands want to record a song like this and La Paz have done it. What a great way to end the album. Good for them.

This album provides a great chance to hear the old songs properly produced, although it's hard to beat the good old days, live in the Burns Bar, Falkirk. It's still a brilliant album though, I highly recommend it.
