LA GENERENTOLA is Rossini's version of the story of Cinderella - an entertaining mixture of comedy, pathos, coloratura fireworks and masquerade. The fairy tale spirit of the piece is captured perfectly in John Cox's production with Allen Charles Klein's imaginative scenery, distorted like three-dimensional cut-outs in an old-fashioned story book in tones of sepia and gold. American mezzo-soprano Kathleen Kuhlmann sings the title role with amazing agility. Marta Taddei and Laura Zannini create a delightfully comic pair of spiteful sisters, whose quick repartee is complemented by the brilliant timing and wit of Claudio Desderi's Don Magnifico. Laurence Dale plays the handsome Prince Ramiro, supported by Alberto Rinaldi's impeccable command of patter in the role of Dandini, and Roderick Kennedy as the devious tutor Alidoro.
