    Description

    Release Date: 24 April 2006

Salisbury Cathedral's West Green is the setting for Symphony for the Spire, the spectacular inaugural concert of the 1991 Salisbury Festival. Set against the magnificent backdrop of the cathedral, the evening is a mixture of spectacular special effects and pyrotechnics with a programme of unique stars, including Placido Domingo, Jessye Norman, and cellist Ofra Harnoy.

The cathedral's West Front also acts as an enormous projection screen for a series of dramatic images to support a special adaptation of Shakespeare's Henry V. Starring Kenneth Branagh in the role that made him internationally famous, and Charlton Heston, the action is backed by a special version of the acclaimed score by Scottish composer, Patrick Doyle.

The Kneller Hall Trumpeters join the English Chamber Orchestra for a performance of the final to Act II of Verdi's Aida. And a massive firework display over Salisbury provides a dramatic backdrop to Handel's La Rejouissance from Music for the Royal Fireworks, and orchestra and chorus bring the evening to a close with Parry's Jerusalem.

    Programme includes:

Kenneth Branagh, Charlton Heston, Patrick Doyle - Henry V - a concert suite
Placido Domingo - E lucevan le stelle, Quando le sere al placido, Be My Love
Ofra Harnoy - The Flight of the Bumble-bee, Hungarian Rhapsody
Charlton Heston - American Names, The Moses Story - Deuteronomy
Jessye Norman - R Strauss's Morgen, September and Caecilie
The English Chamber Orchestra with Peter Donohoe - Saint-Saens' Symphony No. 3, Finale, Verdi's Aida, Act II Finale, Handel's La Rejouissance, from Music for the Royal Fireworks
    Parry's Jerusalem
