Although 'Automatic for the People' was a step in a different musical direction for R.E.M., the album was well received and sold more than 16 million copies worldwide. Released in 1992, the band achieved a more subdued and melodic sound, which helped them become one of the biggest groups on the planet at the time.
The opening track 'Drive' grabs the listeners attention with its poetic lyrics and increasing yet subtle intensity. With such beautiful songs such as the haunting 'Everybody Hurts', 'The Sidewinder Sleeps Tonight', and 'Man On the Moon', this album has so much to offer.
Widely respected as one of the best R.E.M. albums, fans of the band will already know how essential this purchase is, and lovers of alternative rock cannot ignore 'Automatic for the People'. (John Minard)
