The Beach Boys were one of the few American groups to seriously challenge the dominance of The Beatles in the mid-Sixties in terms of
commercial success and musical invention.
Inspired by the genius of their leader Brian Wilson, The Beach Boys produced some of the most innovative and memorable music of the era.
Brian Wilson arguably achieved more on his own during that time than the combined efforts of Lennon and McCartney. Not only was he an inspired
singer and songwriter, he was also a brilliant arranger and producer on a par with his great idol Phil Spector.
This feature-length rockumentary, written and directed by Malcolm Leo (IT CAME FROM HOLLYWOOD, THIS IS ELVIS) was well-received by
critics and fans alike when it first appeared in the mid-eighties and is nowadays recognised as being pretty well the definitive account of The Beach
Boys remarkable musical career.
"An American Band" traces the career of the Beach Boys from their earliest days as a surfing band in 1962 up to the time of Dennis Wilsons death
at the end of 1983. The groups musical development and lives during that heyday period is vividly captured by footage taken from a variety of
sources, including TV broadcasts, movies, studio and home rehearsals and live concerts. Includes all of their biggest hits, including I Get Around,
God Only Knows, Barbara Ann, Sloop John B, Heroes And Villains and Do It Again. The songs are interspersed with insightful interviews with the
Beach Boys themselves - Brian Wilson in particular - as well as with associates like Van Dyke Parkes.
