For La Clemenza di Tito, Glyndebourne Festival Opera commissioned from Stephen Oliver a number of new recitaties, which performed for the first time for this production and feature on this recording. Sung by renowned English and international stars of the stage - including Philip Langridge as Tito, Ashley Putnam as Vitellia and Diana Montague as Sesto - and conducted by Andrew Davis, it was, in particular, the elegant, neo-classic staging by Nicholas Hytner (designed by David Fielding) which made this performance series from the summer of 1991 the sensation it was. National and international critics alike were unanimous in their praise for this genuine opera hit of the nineties.
