| Patrick Troughton…
In what would become a firm TV tradition, Patrick Troughton took over the role of the Doctor in the show's first regeneration scene at the end of the story, The Tenth Planet. This was to be a very different Doctor from the one portrayed by William Hartnell. Gone was the tetchiness of the original, to be replaced by a warm and childish sense of fun. Departed was the Edwardian gentleman look of Hartnell's Doctor, to be replaced by a tramp-like and Chaplinesque cosmic hobo image.
During this time the emphasis of the show moved away from the original intent of educational historical stories to the much more popular monster-based adventures. Having fought successfully against the Daleks during the show's early seasons, the Cybermen now took over as the programme's most frequently returning villains. Along the way there were also encounters with the Yeti on the London Underground and the Ice Warriors - fierce reptiles from the planet Mars. The Second Doctor was finally to meet his match, however, when he was captured by his own people and forced to go on trial for his life in his final story The War Games.
Patrick Troughton's stories have also suffered from the 'junking' of old BBC programmes during the seventies.
