Two time Oscar Winner Robert De Niro (The Godfather Part II, Raging Bull) made his directional debut with this outstanding crime drama based on the critically acclaimed Broadway play by Chazz Palminteri (Bullets Over Broadway, The Usual Suspects).
Set in the tough streets of The Bronx in the 60’s, A Bronx Tale tells the story of Calogero, a young boy from an honest hard working family who witnesses a murder carried out by the local mafia boss, Sonny (Palminteri). After witnessing the murder, Calogero is questioned by the police but decides to stay quiet and not point Sonny out to the cops. Sonny instantly takes a liking to Calogero and takes him under his wing by giving him a bar job in the local mafia hang-out. Soon he is making up to 600 dollars a week in tips much to the dismay of his father Lorenzo (De Niro), who wants him to have nothing to do with these men. But no matter how hard he tries he cannot pull Calogero away from this violent world he seems so fascinated with.
A Bronx Tale is a touching, yet harsh tale of a young man’s coming-of-age as his path in life is guided by two father figures, each with totally different morals, beliefs and livelihoods. (Matt Fairfield)
