When best friends Harry and Edna (Joseph Cotton and Betsy Blair) arrive seeking refuge from an unknown terror, the peaceful equilibrium is shattered. Added to the mix is the return home of Agnes and Tobias' daughter Julia (Lee Remick), running from the collapse of her fourth marriage, and Claire (Kate Reid), Agnes' ever-present alcoholic sister.
