Inspector Bhuvan Sen (Utpal Dutt) is transferred to a remote Bengali village of Dhaniakali. He realizes that all is not well with the place. Under the peaceful surface, lays a cauldron of misery. Madhusudan Roy Choudhury (Uttam Kumar), a drunkard whom the villagers regard as an inhuman beast fascinates him. Bhuvan realises that he only way to reform Madhusudan is to bring his sweetheart Lekha (Sharmila Tagore) back to him. Lekha had loved him once, but turned against him for mysterious reasons.
