    Description

    Release Date: 31 March 2008

With the Roman withdrawal from Britain, the tribes have entered into a period of feudal warfare. Arthur is the war chieftain of a tribe of Celts who has his eye on the bigger picture - unification of the tribes in the face of the Saxon threat. Assisted by his adoptive father, Llud, and Saxon friend, Kai, he has his hands full keeping the peace with opposition from the various feuding factions as well as his duplicitous cousin, Mark of Cornwall.

    Classic 1970s adventure series!

Produced in the early 1970s, Arthur of the Britons may come across as a little creaky nowadays, but when viewed in a historical context it's an entertaining and strikingly original family adventure series. The series cleverly eschews the famous elements of the Arthur legend - Sir Lancelot, Excalibur, Guinevere - in favour of a more down-to-earth historical style. Here Arthur is more a tribal leader than a shining king. Rather than Camelot, he rules over a small community and a wooden fort. As one of several British tribal leaders, he works to fend off the invading Saxons. It's an interesting and original angle, and one that foreshadows later British TV dramas such as the 1980s classic Robin of Sherwood. The cast, led by Oliver Tobias, is strong and appealing. British cult TV fans will certainly get a kick out of Brian Blessed's guest appearances - as a typically boisterous and loud warrior chief. For the cult TV aficionado, Arthur of the Britons is a must-buy.
