Slovak filmmaker Juraj Jakubisko directs this English-language historical drama based on the legend of 16th-century Hungarian Countess Elizabeth Bathory. Bathory, who became famous for supposedly bathing in the blood of virgins in a bid to preserve her youth and beauty, has even been included in the Guinness Book of Records as being the most prolific mass murderer in history. Jakubisko's film, however, offers a sympathetic portrayal of the Countess, showing her at the mercy of the scheming politicians and courtiers around her. Anna Friel and Karel Roden star.
