Charlie Wilson (Tom Hanks) is a congressman for Texas and lives a lifestyle quite different from most congressmen. On an average day Wilson lounges in a hot tub, surrounded by playmates and strippers with a dash of Cocaine to really get the party going. He is less than a model politician. That is, until the day he sees a news report of the ongoing struggle from a war-torn Afghanistan.
Joanne Herring (Julia Roberts) approaches Wilson about the war and Wilson realises that he is in a unique position to help. His connections to foreign policies and covert-ops committees mean that Wilson can actually do something to help.
Based on a true story, Wilson changes his life around and starts to do some good, with the help of Gust Avrakotos (Philip Seymour Hoffman) he begins a secret war and supports the Afghans to try and defeat the Soviet Union.
