Eric Sykes had already forged a career as a top comic writer - including scripts for Frankie Howerd, Peter Sellers, Tony Hancock - when his big break in front of the cameras came in a spoof pantomime, Pantomania in 1955.
After subsequent Christmas successes came Sykes and A... (1960-65) featuring the domestic misadventures of the bumbling Eric and his long-suffering sister played by Hattie Jaques. Seven years later, along with snobby neighbour Mr Brown (Richard Wattis) and local busybody policeman 'Corky' (Deryck Guyler), they returned in the colour series Sykes (1972-79). The public revelled in its warm, gentle and perfectly-crafted humour and Eric and Hattie became one of the great comedy couples.
This selection revisits the best moments from these series, showcasing Eric Sykes' versatility, comic timing and personality.
