    Description

    Hetty Wainthropp, a sprightly, intelligent pensioner, wakes on her 60th birthday and decides to become a private investigator. Armed with just her handbag and lots of gritty northern common sense, she proves she can easily outwit the professionals. Although she walks, takes the bus or occasionally borrows a scooter to get to the crime scene, with sidekick Geoffrey - a teenager she caught shoplifting - husband Robert and her steely determination, how can she fail?

    The Bearded Lady:
    Hetty believes she has a natural talent for sleuthing and sets up the Wainthropp Detective Agency. Investigating a homeless person's death Hetty and Geoffrey are drawn into a deeper mystery.

    Eye Witness:
    The detectives are called by anxious parents who believe their profoundly deaf son is missing. He has, in fact, witnessed a strangulation and run away. The search begins.

    Fingers:
    On a trip to Italy the owner of Hetty's hotel asks her to look after his family in England. They are being threatened - but by whom? Hetty and Geoffrey aim to find out.

    Widdershins:
    Hetty and her husband investigate the alleged suicide of a former professional footballer. After talking to the locals she discovers the village was once notorious for witches. Is there a connections?

    A High Profile:
    Michael has learning difficulties and his mother knows he can't live at home - but she wants to make sure he's all right. Hetty has to find him before it's too late.

    Safe as Houses:
    Hetty's old music-hall partner hires her to find her foster daughter Chrissie. While searching they discover a series of arson attacks on local homes and use unconventional methods to confront the arsonist.
