Homer (James Belushi) was sent away to a home age 14, but 20 years later he learns his dad is dying of cancer. Desperate to get back home to his ill father, Homer decides to hitchhike across state unaware of the dangers of being on the road.
After being robbed, Homer comes across Eddie (Whoopi Goldberg), an escaped mental patient and small time criminal who has a month to live. The pair forge an unlikely friendship as she protects him from the dangers of a road trip, whilst he helps her come to terms with death.
