When renowned violinist Holger Brandt (Howard) first hears his daughter's piano teacher (Bergman) plays, he is immediately smitten with her talent and beauty. When they fall in love, he leaves his family so they can be together. But it is not long before Brandt comes to realise how much he misses his wife and daughter and agonises over the misery he has caused them.
In her first English-speaking role, Bergman made a spectacular American debut in this celebrated David O. Selznick production.
