His career took off with roles such as the uncompromising fireman Ted Robbins in Ealing's wartime classic The Bells Go Down, and the saturnine Lord Rohan in The Man In Grey, Gainsborough Studios' greatest success.
Moving on to a variety of roles, Mason appeared in Carol Reed's acclaimed The Odd Man Out, a tense crime thriller set in Northern Ireland, 5 Fingers, a war time espionage film set in Turkey, starring Mason as a valet with sinister ambitions, and The Man Between, another classic Reed - Mason collaboration, which sees Mason traversing the seedy underbelly of post-war Berlin.
