Celebrated French director Michel Deville invites audiences to read between the lines with La Lectrice (The Reader, 1988), a sublimely tantalising fantasy based on a selection of works by author Raymond Jean.
The delectable Miou-Miou earned a Cesar nomination for her tour-de-force performance in the film's central dual role. She's first introduced as Constance, a woman who shares her love of literature with her boyfriend. Audaciously, Miou-Miou also plays Marie, a character in the book Constance is currently lost in. Marie is a habitual storyteller herself and so Deville skilfully blends together a dazzling number of narratives in this cinematic page-turner.
Winner of the Prix Louis Delluc, the rich and boldly mesmerising La Lectrice is a treat for both ears and eyes thanks to the lingering ring of Miou-Miou's voice, an assortment of sonatas by Beethoven and an exquisite procession of brilliant, beautiful images.
