One of the most revered figures in French Cinema, Robert Bresson is justly celebrated as a true auteur and Les Dames du Bois de Boulogne the work that established his unique, highly personal vision. It was with this, only his second feature, that Bresson turned his back on conventional filmmaking and began to forge his own path in cinema history.
Centring around a dangerous love triangle, the story, based on a tale by Diderot, combines the superficial glamour of Parisian high society with the seething passions and jealousies that prompt a spurned femme fatale to seek her ex-lover's humiliation.
With highly literary dialogue from Jean Cocteau, the film is an intense study of erotic obsession and the redeeming power of true love. At the film's core is Maria Casares' brilliant performance as the woman who is driven to destroy the object of her most ardent desire.
