In the first ever all-Merseyside final, Everton took the lead through Lineker, but in a magnificent second-half fight-back, two goals from Rush and one from Johnston clinched the double for player-manager Kenny Dalglish's 'Mighty Reds'.

In an emotionally-charged final, Hansen, Barnes, Beardsley and Aldridge enabled the Reds to dominate the game. But it was left to extra-time before 'super-sub' Ian Rush, with the deftest of touches, settled the Fans' Final.
