In a poor Canadian mining village after the Second World War, fragile dreamer Margaret McNeil finds a kindred spirit when a tall, Celtic miner serenades her one night in a diner and follows her home. Her mother, an extremely reserved widow who has lost both a son and a husband to the mines, views such romance as folly - futile and soul crushing. Against her mothers wishes Margaret marries the miner, who tries to avoid the dangerous mining life by getting fired and taking a job as a dishwasher in a Chinese restaurant.
As Margaret's brother falls in love with the cruel mine manager's daughter, plotting to leave the godforsaken hamlet and keep both their souls intact, Margaret and Neil shut themselves away from the oppressive community, building their own refuge by the wind swept coasts, a haven for their burgeoning desires and memories.
