When Peter (Anthony Higgins), a British Diplomat in France suspects his wife Margaret (Charlotte Rampling) is having an affair, he is totally unprepared when he realises her secret lover is not even of the same species, but a chimpanzee called Max!
Before long Peter finds he is increasingly obsessed with his wife's relationship with Max, finding it incomprehensible how she can have such a relationship with a beast. Not wanting to appear old fashioned he invites Max to live with them, but before long the situation starts to take its toll on the bizarre menage a trois, with some truly hilarious consequences.
