The BBC series of The Morecambe and Wise Show was one of the most popular television series ever and represented the legendary comic duo at the height of their powers. In their magnificent sketches, musical numbers and magical tomfoolery, they would captivate an audience of millions and leave a thousand hilarious memories.
By the time Morecambe and Wise had started their third series in 1970, they were already becoming the nation's favourite light entertainment double-act. Eric's raised eyebrows, behind the curtain antics, the shoulder-and-cheek slapping combination, the plastic cup-aided Jimmy Durante impression and the regular references to Luton Town were already eagerly awaited.
The show's format had also been established - with an introduction inevitably ruined by Eric, a scene in the duo's flat, musical guests and short sketches, a guest star performing in one of Ernie's plays (in this series Fenella Fielding appears in the Nelson and Lady Hamilton play while Ian Carmichael plays Dr Frankenstein) and the final 'surprise' show-stealing appearance of Janet Webb as the cast take their bows.
