    Description

    Release Date: 04 October 2004

Barry Foster plays Orde Wingate in Don Shaw's celebrated trilogy of BBC plays about the military career of one of the most controversial and unorthodox Allied commanders of the Second World War.

Born into a religious and military family, the young Orde Wingate became a passionate Zionist on his first posting to Palestine and began to develop revolutionary guerrilla tactics to help the Jewish settlers he befriended there. He further developed his expertise in guerrilla warfare leading 'Gideon Force' in Ethiopia against the Italians.

His unorthodox tactics led him into frequent clashes with his military superiors and drove him almost to the point of breakdown and suicide. However, his strong religious convictions would see him through and take him to Burma where he devised a long range penetration strategy and elite fighting forces called 'The Chindits'. Inspired by the Biblical story of Elijah and the Ravens, his revolutionary strategy would prove that the Japanese invaders were anything but invincible.

With a powerful and uncompromising script from the writer of 'Bomber Harris', and a distinguished supporting cast including Denholm Elliott, Bernard Hepton and Nigel Stock as Wavell, 'Orde Wingate' tells one of the most extraordinary true stories of the Second World War.
