When young undergraduate Stanley Windrush is conscripted into the British Army he finds the simplest training extremely hard and starts to lag behind the other soldiers. After failing his officer selection board he is drafted to a holding unit where he is under the command of Major Hitchcock. After training here for a few weeks Stanley is then picked up by his uncle, a senior officer in the war office, and invited to join a ‘secret’ operation, but Stanley soon becomes suspicious of the operation and of his uncle as he begins to think something scandalous is going on.
