When KYM (Anne Hathaway) returns to the Buchman family home for the wedding of her sister RACHEL (Rosemarie Dewitt), she brings a long history of personal crisis and family conflict along with her. The wedding party's abundant cast of friends and relations have gathered for an idyllic weekend of feasting, music and love, but Kym with her black-comic one-liners and knack for bombshell drama is a catalyst for long-simmering tensions in the family dynamic. Filled with the rich and eclectic characters that have always been a hallmark of Jonathan Demme's films, RACHEL GETTING MARRIED paints a strikingly perceptive and sometimes hilarious family portrait. Director Demme, first-time writer Jenny Lumet, and the stellar acting ensemble leaven the drama of these difficult but compelling people with wry affection and generosity of spirit.

Anne Hathaway's best performance by a country mile.
I watched this excellent drama after getting it on DVD for Christmas. This is by far and away Anne Hathaway's finest performance of her career so far. Anne Hathaway plays Kym Buchman who gets a break from rehab and returns to the family home in time for her sister Rachel's wedding. In so doing Kym lets out some home truths, personal crisis, conflict in the family and family tragedy at the rehearsal dinner the night before Rachel's big day. The couple's family and friends have gathered together to what they thought would be a lovely weekend of feasting, love and music. But Kym has other plans and suddenly her flair for bombshell drama and hard hitting one liners come bursting out and long shimmering tensions rise to the surface. Anne Hathaway as Kym is electrifying and gives easily her finest performance of her career to date. She owns the screen stealing nearly every scene she shows up in. Miss Hathaway is well supported by Debra Winger in a cameo role as her mother, Bill Irwin as her father and Rosemary DeWitt as Rachel. Jonathan Demme directs with his usual masterly flair and great touch making this look like a home movie using hand held digital cameras. High quality film-making then from a genius director. This drama is sizzling and well worth it if only for Anne Hathaway's explosive performance and top drawer direction.
