When a young military recruit, Tom (Dexter Fletcher) flees the army in the midst of war, he disguises himself as a young woman to avoid being captured by his vengeful commanding officer. Upon meeting Darky (Bob Hoskins) and his band of gypsies, he is mistaken for a kind of witch known as a 'rawney' - a half-mad, half-magical woman who brings good fortune, and is treated with a mixture of awe and fear.

Elle (Zoe Wanamaker) and her illegitimate son, Simon, are shunned by many in the group who believe the boy's disability to be punishment for his mother's sins. When the rawney saves Simon from being attacked, Elle takes pity on this strange new addition to the group. But Jessie, the gypsy leader's daughter, soon discovers Tom's true identity, with disastrous consequences that will put all of their lives in grave danger!
