Horace Rumpole (Leo McKern) is the down-at-heel yet brilliant barrister who plies the courtrooms of the Old Bailey. Fond of quoting Wordsworth and notorious for turning away many suits according to his own moral code, he never prosecutes, always defends.
Famed for winning his cases there is one person he will always lose out to - his wife, "She Who Must Be Obeyed!"

Rumpole of the Bailey
For me Rumpole of the Bailey is worth buying as I loved it the first time around and I think it still holds its magic.

Rumpole of the Bailey - The Complete Collection
With a bit more time on my hand, I look forward to watching the whole series. Well packaged, and promptly delivered this boxed set is just too much to digest in one go. Lots of rich plots, characterisation, and of course, the indomitable Leo McKern as Rumpole. However, now that it is Lent, I'm gong to leave this till after Easter, before I get into it.

Rejoice at Rupole
Rumpole of the Bailey - The Complete Collection is an outstandingly enjoyable compendium of all but one of the Rumpole episodes. The combination of John Mortimer QC's witty insight as author and Leo McKern's masterful interpretation of Horace Rumpole, the 'Old Bailey hack' guarantees great entertainment - and it's delivered with a great spadeful. Ably supported by a huge ensemble cast of many of the UK's leading comic and straight actors, this is a timeless reverie of enjoyment which points up the lunacies of the law that are still relevant today. This DVD set is worth buying at almost any price. I mentioned earlier that it is missing 1 episode: 'Rumpole and the Confession of Guilt'. This was the pilot episode aired by the BBC in the early 1970s and I can only assume that rights issues have required it to be left out - a great pity but it is available as a standalone item on a Region 1 disc. This in no way detracts from the 37+ hours of viewing in this collection that awaits you. Buy it!
