Description

'Suzhou River' is a visually arresting tale of mystery and obsession set in the neon lit nightclub and grimy industrial wastelands of Shanghai. Petty criminal Mardar wanders the city streets haunted by the memory of his dead lover Moudan, who threw herself into the murky depths of the Suzhou river. But when he encounters MeiMei, the performer of a Mermaid act in a nightclub, Mardar is so struck by her striking resemblance to Moudan that he becomes convinced that she is in fact his lost love...Lou Ye's intricately constructed and compelling film pays homage to Hitchcock's "Vertigo" and the lush visual style of Wong Kar Wai.
