Prize winning, best selling author, Sarah Maloney (Miranda Richardson) is commissioned to write a biography about little known Canadian poet, Mary Swann. Whilst investigating Swann's roots, she uncovers a complex history and a web of lies. As she tries to unearth the full story ahead of other predatory publishers, she relies on the help of Swann's best friend, Rose Hindmarsh (Brenda Fricker) - the only person who has Mary's last manuscript.
Complicated by the competing attentions of two rival suitors, old friend Stephen (Michael Ontkean) and on-off lover Brownie (David Cubitt), Sarah begins a journey of self discovery trying to incorporate love with a journalistic career of integrity. As she digs deeper into her emotions the visual poetry of the film is pushed to the forefront.
