It is 1941 and the terrors of war-torn Europe seem a long way away for the small expatriate community living in Singapore. Based on real life experiences this is the powerful story of women whose lives are changed forever.
1941: The privileged lives of a small group of expatriate men and women are about to be shattered. Colonel Jefferson receives some devastating news that will lead to an ongoing nightmare for the Singapore inhabitants.
1941: The city of Singapore has been bombed by the Japanese and the hospital is overflowing with casualties. There is a massive evacuation by ship to Australia.
1942: The survivors of the ship are separated and taken prisoner. The women meet ferocious Captain Yamauchi who lays down the appalling prison camp rules.
1942: Sylvia Ashburton, for punishment, is used as an example to teach the others how to bow. Sister Ulrica, the Dutch leader meets Marion Jefferson, the English spokesperson.
1942: Marion tries to keep morale going with sing-songs but gets little support. Dejected, she then proposes that the women build a sickbay out of a burnt-out hut, which gives them a sense of purpose.
