    It is 1942 and the women are finding camp life worse than they could have imagined. Marion Jefferson, the spokeswoman is interrogated by the secret police leaving her mentally drained. Work on the sick bay continues and malaria is rife.
    1942: There are suspicions that Blanche may be fraternising with the enemy. Quinine becomes the most sought after medicine. Rose and Blanche invoke the wrath of the Commandant.
    1942: The women are feeling very unfeminine, with rough skin, filthy clothing and low morale. They organise games and parties to keep them occupied - gossip spreads about a close friendship.
    1942: Marion makes Judith a promise regarding Debbie's future and Debbie tells Blanche her real family name. An escape committee idea by Blanche causes heated discussion.
    1942: Blanche and Debbie are tied to poles as punishment and Marion pleads for mercy for them. The Dutch internees offer to help the English with the impossible task the Commandant has set.
    1942: Christmas is coming and with it arguments about entertainment. The Commandant announces a move to another camp and Doctor Bea worries about an outbreak of Beri-Beri.
