John Wayne plays Mongol chieftain Temujin, better known as Genghis Khan. The Mongolian warlord must do battle against the rival tribe that killed his father, however the battle pales in comparison with Temujin's home life. He must attempt to woo the heart of the red-haired Tartar prisoner Bortai, played by Susan Hayward, whom he has captured in a raid.
Eventually, Bortai falls for his many charms, Temujin defeats his enemies and is crowned Genghis Khan.
