When young orphan James (Jon Newman) is invited to spend Christmas at Greville Lodge with his mysterious Great Uncle (George Cole), he expects an uneventful Yuletide spent with just the old man and his faithful housekeeper Mrs Robinson (Prunella Scales) for company.
Instead he becomes enmeshed in a chilling ghost mystery as the stately home and its wooded grounds start to give up their terrible secret. A shadowy figure stalks the lodge; locked doors block access to rooms that aren't there... and blackbirds call in the dead of night.
Now James finds himself being pulled back to the long-hidden events of Christmas 1939, and the arrival of a young evacuee girl (Anna Weeks) at the stately home. Caught between the war years and modern day, James must unravel the last great, heartbreaking, secret of Greville Lodge...
