The police are after Jack Barrett. He has stolen several thousand pounds to pay off a blackmailer and is now on the run. He tries desperately to get in touch with Melville Farr, a prosperous young barrister with a beautiful wife but, cornered and arrested by the police he commits suicide in his prison cell rather than answer the probing questions that are put to him. Mel's wife Laura presses him about Barrett's death and is appalled to learn that the men were both lovers. She leaves Mel, not because of his infidelity but because she knows that Mel still loves the dead man. He, in turn, is relieved as he knows that by going away, Laura will be spared the humiliation of the scandal that must come when he has exposed the blackmailers and his past is, in turn, exposed...

Banned on its original theatrical release in the United States, this BAFTA-nominated story of deception, blackmail and revenge stars Dirk Bogarde (Death in Venice, Accident, The Servant) in one of his career best performances. Ably supported by Sylvia Syms (Ice Cold in Alex, At Home with the Braithwaites) and Denis Price (The Naked Truth, I'm All Right Jack), Victim is one of the crown jewels of the Rank stable of films.
