    Tim (Mel Gibson) is a handsome young man with the intelligence and innocence of a child. Protected from the real world, Tim works as a builder's labourer and odd-job man when he meets Mary Horton (Piper Laurie), an older well-educated woman.
    The two strike-up an unusual friendship but one which begins to cause suspicion as Tim's friends and family begin to question Mary's intentions.
