From the acclaimed novel by James Keenaway and directed by multi-Academy Award Nominee Ronald Neame (Great Expectations, The Prime of Miss Jeane Brodie and Brief Encounter) comes this intimate epic of respect, honour and loyalty.
Major Jock Sinclair (Alec Guinness) is soon to hand over illustrious and commendation-strewn command of his Scottish regiment to Colonel Basil Barrow (John Mills). Resentful of Barrow's more sympathetic leadership, the once popular Sinclair grows more estranged from his platoon and his own daughter, ensconced with her father amongst the men in their barracks.
Eventually, one shocking moment of unexpected violence leads to Sinclair's reprimand and court-marshal by Barrow.
However this only further complicates strained relationships amongst the soldiers and before long, a battle of wills ensues between the incensed Sinclair and Barrow, desperate to restore order and discipline to this once great regiment.
Bolstered by towering performances from Alec Guinness, John Mills (both Nominated for Best Actor at the BAFTAs) and Susannah York, Ronald Neame’s fascinating character study is an intelligent, witty and ultimately extremely powerful pinnacle of British cinema.
