Orphaned at 19, the glamorous identical twins Maria and Frieda (Mary and Madeleine Collinson) move from Vienna to the village of Karnstein to live with their kind, submissive aunt (Kathleen Byron - Black Narcissus) and grim uncle Gustav Weil (Peter Cushing - Dracula, Frankenstein). Gustav is a fanatical Puritan and leader of The Brotherhood, a religious sect feared for their witch hunts and burnings. Gustav is determined to kill his nemesis, Count Karnstein (Damien Thomas), a devil-worshipping libertine who has been turned into a vampire by his ravishingly beautiful undead ancestor. One day, while out walking with her sister, Freida is lured into the Count's coach and whisked off to Karnstein Castle...
