Laid-back Baxter Thwaites (Michael Caine, The Italian Job, Alfie) is the governor of ‘Cascara’, a tiny, fictional and impoverished British island somewhere in the Caribbean.
Cascara is completely forgotten by its British colonial masters, until an abandoned oil well strikes mineral water. Suddenly the British, Americans, Cubans, French and an incompetent local rebel are struggling for control of the island.
The international parade of characters out to exploit the island that come through Baxter’s territory is an obvious pastiche of the invasions of Grenada and the Falkland Islands that took place in the early 1980s.
This hilarious comedy also stars Valerie Perrine (Lenny), Brenda Vaccaro (Once is not Enough, Midnight Cowboy) and Billy Connolly (Mrs Brown).
Water also features an excellent soundtrack written by none other than George Harrison from The Beatles, Eric Clapton, Eddy Grant and Mike Moran.
