Driven by a powerhouse performance by Mark Ruffalo, XX-XY is an intelligent and funny film about the differences between the sexes. Gritty yet sophisticated, the film explores the sometimes competing aims of sexual freedom and emotional honesty, youthful ideals and real-world complexity.
A firm Sundance favourite, XX-XY tells the story of three New York college students, smart but neurotic - Coles (Ruffalo), Thea (Kathleen Robertson) and Sam (Maya Stange) who have a three way relationship which is simultaneously intense and playful, with freedom being the keyword and passion far outweighing commitment. Then, some 10 years later, they meet up again. Sexual experimenter Thea has settled into a ' normal' heterosexual marriage. But the unresolved relationship between Coles and Sam plays havoc with their seemingly settled lives.
