It is the Cold War and crack KGB officer Major Petrofsky (Pierce Brosnan) is sent to a US air base in East Anglia to assemble an atomic weapon which, when detonated, will heap blame on the Americans and dissolve NATO. Even with the help of dashing agent Irina Vassilievna (Joanna Cassidy) Petrofsky hasn't got a way to deal with unorthodox spy-catcher John Preston (Michael Caine) who'll try, come hell or high water, to stop the Russians at their deadly game.
