The story of Edmund, a fifteen year old boy living with his family in immediate post-war Berlin. Influenced by a Nazi teacher who tells him that only the strong should survive, the boy's subsequent actions have terrible consequences for both himself and his family...
Following Rome, Open City and Paisá, Germany, Year Zero was the third panel of Rossellini's great war triptych, and remains the least well known. However, it is every bit the equal of its more famous predecessors, and the long, final sequence of Edmund wandering amongst the ruins of the devastated city is one of the finest things the cinema has to offer.
