One of Jacques Rivette's most accessible films - a reflection on theatre and life, mixed with playful references to haunted-house thrillers and mysterious-mansion whodunnits. The plot concerns semi-professional actors Emily (Jane Birkin) and Charlotte (Geraldine Chaplin) and their small theatrical troupe who are brought to a famous playwright's (Jean-Pierre Kalfon) ornate, decaying mansion to perform a work-in-progress that seems to mirror some unexplained recent events in the author's own life.
