Ten-part silent serial from French pioneer Louis Feuillade. Made at a time when France was in the grip of fear and suspicion due to World War 1, this hugely popular crime drama centred around the efforts of journalist Phillipe Guerande (Edouard Mathe) as he tries to unmask the activities and identities of an underworld anarchist group calling themselves 'Les Vampires'. As he gets closer to unmasking the ringleaders of the gang, tracking their activities across a panic-ridden Paris, Guerande starts to build up a profile of their tactics and cunning. Hugely influential on its release, the serial was an influence on both Fritz Lang and Alfred Hitchcock, as well as being instrumental in the development of the crime and gangster genre.
