Starring: Charlie Chaplin

Charlie Chaplin. The name alone evokes the image of a character with a brush-like moustache in a derby, oversized trousers, floppy shoes, and a cane. He was, and is perhaps still the most memorable character in film history. He was "The Tramp".

The story of Charlie Chaplin's rise to fame is a remarkable one. Born in South London on April 16, 1889, his childhood was one of poverty, insecurity and near destitution. Having a mother who suffered from mental illness and a father who deserted them, the young Charles was often left to his own devices. It was at the tender age of 9 that Charles Chaplin made his debut as the Tivoli Theatre Manchester with a clog-dancing troup. Although it may not have seemed possible at the time, Charlie Chaplin had begun his journey to stardom.

It is because of the hardships he endured as a child that he was so driven to succeed. Rather than forget his background, Charlie Chaplin continuously referred to these experiences which were so much a part of him when he began his career in silent films.

This he did through his most famous character, "The Tramp". Charlie Chaplin made the world laugh, cry and think of his genius and versatility.

Charlie Chaplin died in 1977 as Sir Charles Chaplin in Switzerland where he lived in exile voluntarily. His legend lives on.
