Thomas Gainsborough 1727-1788

Gainsboroguh, quickly became a famous and sought after portraitist by the English Society. However, his true love lay in painting landscapes, which during his lifetime, his new Approach - seeing English landscapes with an Englishman's eye and painting them thus - was never fully appreciated.
Gainsborough was born in Sudbury, Suffolk. His mother and father, realising he had a real talent at the tender age of 13, sent him to London to study as an artist. Five years late he had his own studio, and the next year he married. On the death of his father in 1748 he returned to Sudbury, and 1752 saw Gainsborough and his family moving to Ipswich, where still unable to sell his landscapes, he took more and more commissions to paint portraits.
His true success came almost overnight when he move to the fashionable City of Bath - Here his talent as a portraitist was in great demand from the local worthies as well as wealthy visitors.
Gainsborough moved to London in 1774 where he continued to be a success until he finally died in 1788 still not achieving the recognition he so much craved for as a landscape artist.
In this portrayal, we listen to an array of classical music to compliment Gainsborough's work, while visiting Sudbury his home town, and Bath where his fortunes changed for the better overnight.
