When Jeff (Kurt Russell) drives from Boston to San Diego with his wife Amy (Kathleen Quinlan) he thinks he's leaving his troubles behind and making a new start. But whilst taking the scenic route through the vast desert, their car unexpectedly breaks down. Stranded on a barren road, miles from civilisation, Jeff and Amy can only wait for help... which arrives in the form of "Red" (J.T. Walsh), the driver of an 18-wheeler truck.

Seemingly a good Samaritan, Red offers to drop Amy at Belle's Diner – the only place for miles around where you can phone for help. Jeff waits with the car, eventually managing to start it, and soon he is back on the road, heading for the Diner. Yet none of the customers there have seen Amy, or Red's truck. Suddenly, Jeff is plunged into a terrifying, frantic search for Amy... a search that takes him into the dark spaces of the desert... and into the darkest reaches of the human soul.
